Spring has arrived and that means all the yummy, nutritious in-season produce is here too! This is what’s in season right now and why you should be eating it!
Asparagus– These green spears are one of the best veggie sources of folate, a B vitamin that could help keep you out of a slump. Folate is important for the synthesis of the neurotransmitters dopamine, serotonin, and norepinephrine. All of these are crucial for mood.
Spring peas– Green peas contain adequate amounts of anti-oxidants, flavonoids such as carotenes, lutein and zea-xanthin as well as vitamin A. They’re also rich in health benefiting phyto-nutrients, minerals and vitamins. High in protein and fiber too!
Artichokes– They’re loaded with magnesium, a mineral vital for more than 300 biochemical reactions in the body—including generating energy. If you’re not getting enough magnesium, your muscles have to work harder to react and you tire more quickly. One medium artichoke provides 77 mg of magnesium and just 60 calories!
Strawberries– Great for the skin! They’re loaded with antioxidants that help your skin repair damage caused by environmental factors like pollution and UV rays. Plus they’re high in vitamin C which is associated with fewer wrinkles and less dryness.
Blueberries– These blue gems are filled with a type of antioxidant called anthocyanins, which have been shown in animal studies to increase signals among brain cells and improve their resilience, enhancing learning and memory. They’re high in disease-fighting antioxidants, fight inflammation and are low in calories and sugar.
Eggs– Of course this list couldn’t be complete without Easter eggs! Eggs are one of nature’s most perfect foods. High in muscle building protein and full of choline, needed to make a brain chemical called acetylcholine, crucial for storing memories. Don’t leave out the yolk, since that is the most nutritious part of the egg and we now know that eggs do not contribute to high cholesterol, they actually reduce it!
